Mossburn Vintage Casks Single Malt Glen Spey 2008 is a third party bottling of Speyside Single Malt Whisky. Mossburn Distillers & Blenders is a brand new Scotch whisky project owned by Marussia Beverage which is part of the empire controlled by Swedish billionaire Frederik Paulsen. The company is headquartered at Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders on the site of the former Jedforest Hotel. Their new distillery, called Reivers Distillery, will be one of the first new distilleries to be built in the Borders for over 150 years. Mossburn have also established Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, which opened in 2017 (the second distillery on Skye after Highland Park). The parent company also own the Kaikyo Distillery in Japan which produces Hatozaki whiskies. Not content with this, they have also created the peaty Caisteal Chamuis whisky range. The first Mossburn bottlings were released in 2017.

Building a whisky distillery and waiting for whisky to come online (the spirit has to be aged for at least 3 years before it can even be called whisky) is a long term project. So, in the meantime, Mossburn have started the ball rolling by bottling a small collection of ever-changing single malt whiskies and two permanent blended malts, an Island and Speyside, with bespoke cask bills. There are also some very limited occasional single cask bottlings.

Glen Spey Distillery is located in Rothes, Moray, within the Speyside region. It was founded in 1878 by James Stuart & Co. under the name “Mill of Rothes Distillery.” The distillery was later rebuilt and renamed Glen Spey in 1887. It is owned by Diageo and is one of their smallest distilleries with four pot stills. It is used in many Scotch whisky blends such as J&B Rare and, due to this, single malt bottlings are relatively rare.

Mossburn Vintage Casks Single Malt Glen Spey 2008 was distilled in 2008 and bottled at a Cask Strength of 55.9% ABV in April 2019 as a 10 year old whisky without any colouring or chill filtration.

Cask Bill HHD, hogshead.

Tasting Notes

Mossburn Vintage Casks Single Malt Glen Spey 2008 has a fragrant grassy nose with dried apple, linseed and some light vanilla. The palate starts sweeter with a little biscuity malt and vanilla cream, some floral spice and a delicious delicate light spice on quite a long dry finish.
