Description

Moulin de Duhart is the second wine of Chateau Duhart Milon which is owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), the owners of Chateau Lafite Rothschild.

Chateau Duhart Milon is located in the Pauillac and was one of the 10 original fourth growths in the 1855 classification of Bordeaux and was acquired by the Rothschild family in 1965. It is named after a gun-runner for Louis XIV who has previously owned the land called Sieur de Duhart and the local hamlet of Milon. The estate is situated on a knoll which separates this chateau from Chateau Lafite. It is located in the north of the Pauillac appellation. It covers 76 hectares, almost in one block on the western side of Château Lafite Rothschild, on the Milon hillside which extends the plateau of Carruades de Lafite. Its sandy gravel soils, deposited in the Quaternary period, contain variable levels of pebbles, sand, and clay. The largest terroirs of Duhart-Milon have mostly gravel soil with 10%+ of clay content. The vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (67%) and Merlot (33%).

The second wine, Moulin de Duhart, is made from selected vats of the “Grand Vin”. Moulin de Duhart is vinified using the traditional methods for the great Médoc wines, with destemming and crushing of the grapes before fermentation in concrete and stainless-steel vats. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 30°C, followed by maceration for about ten days. After malolactic fermentation, the wines are transferred to two-year-old French oak barrels and aged for 12 months. The blend varies from 55 to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 to 45% Merlot, depending on the vintage, which is then aged 10 months in two year old barrels and 10 months in stainless steel vats. Annual production of to 7 to 12 thousand cases.

Moulin de Duhart 2018 is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The origin of the name comes from the former presence of a windmill on the Carruades, next to the Duhart-Milon vineyard.

Tasting Notes

Beautiful deep, glittering colour. The nose is already expressive, offering aromas of cherries and ripe blackcurrants, with a hint of vanilla. On the palate, the attack is soft and full-bodied. The fruit from the nose reappears, with a deliciously tangy, voluptuous character. Long, precise finish leaving a pleasant impression of sweetness.
