Nederburg Winemasters Noble Late Harvest is a sweet, dessert wine. It is part of Nederburg’s Winemasters Reserve range of wines which also includes Edelrood and a Cabernet Sauvignon amongst others.
Nederburg has a long wine-making history stretching back over 200 years to 1791 when Phillipus Bernadus Wolvaart was granted ownership of 49 hectares of land, in what is now Paarl, by the Dutch East India Company. He called his new property Nederburgh and immediately set about clearing land and planting vines. By 1808 he had planted over 63,000 vines laying the foundations for what was to become the wine company we know today. Nederburg has changed hands many times through the years but was owned by the large South African wine and spirit company, Distell, for many years. Most recently, in 2023, Distell was taken over by Heineken and integrated into Heineken Beverages, a company created by the merger of Distell and Namibia Breweries. Since 2021 the team at Nederburg has been led by cellar master, and seasoned winemaker, Samuel Viljoen. he is ably assisted by winemakers Zinaschke Steyn, Imellia Prins and Jamie Williams. Nederburg remains one of South Africa’s most awarded wineries and their wines display a hallmark combination of fruit and finesse.
Nederburg Winemasters Noble Late Harvest is made from grapes sourced from vineyards in the Paarl and Durbanville wine-growing regions and is bottled as a Wine of Origin Western Cape. The vines are located at an altitude of 120 m to 160 m above sea level and were planted between 1984 and 1993 on Tukulu and Oakleaf soils. The vines are irrigated.
For the Nederburg Winemasters Noble Late Harvest only grapes affected with Noble Rot (the beneficial form of the Botrytis cinerea mould) are carefully hand-selected at harvest. Noble Rot basically dries out the grapes causing them to become slightly raisined. This concentrates the sweetness and the complexity of flavours and aromas in the grapes. The grapes are fully de-stemmed in the cellars prior to pressing, followed by cool-fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 16°C for a period of six weeks. The wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation, but it is put through a separator to prevent fermentation from occurring once the desired sugar level had been reached.
The blend of grapes for the 2018 Nederburg Winemasters Noble Late Harvest is 56% Chenin Blanc, 39% Muscat de Frontignan 3% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Grassa De Cotnari. Residual sugar is 211 g/L.
em>Nederburg Noble Late Harvest can be served with patés, blue cheeses, pastries and all sorts of desserts. It is, of course, delicious on its own.
Nederburg Noble Late Harvest is a brilliant yellow colour with hints of gold. The nose has aromas of orange peel, apricot and dried peach aromas. The palate demonstrates a subtle balance between acid and sugar with dried fruit, pineapple and citrus flavours.
