Niepoort 2000 Colheita Port (Single Vintage Tawny Port)

Niepoort 2000 Colheita Port is a single vintage Tawny Port. Colheita literally translates as “harvest” and Colheita Port is a Tawny Port from a single vintage that must be aged for a minimum of 7 years in oak cask. Niepoort is a family company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port. “Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match.” (James Suckling, Vintage Port). The grapes for the Niepoort 2000 Colheita Port were sourced from vineyards in the Vale do Pinhoa and Ferrao. After hand harvesting the grapes were foot trodden in granite stone lagares at Niepoort’s Vale de Mendiz winery. After vinification the Port is then aged in 550 Litre oak casks (known as a “pip”) at the Vila de Gaia cellars. Niepoort only bottle their Colheitas after a minimum of 10 years and only when they are considered to be achieving the perfect balance in the Port’s evolution. Bottled 2014.
