Niepoort 2004 Colheita Port is a single vintage Tawny Port from one of Portugal’s great Tawny Port specialists.
Niepoort is a family company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port. “Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match.” (James Suckling, Vintage Port).
Colheita Ports are dated tawny Ports aged in cask. The minimum age requirement is 7 year, but the tradition at Niepoort is to age several more years in the casks before bottling. The wine takes on a tawny hue. Wood and nutty tones are evident on the palate due to the wine’s slow ageing in old casks. A great combination of cooked summer fruits, coffee and raisins. Full and long. The grapes are hand picked from vineyards with schistous soils located in Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão with an average age of over 60 years old. This is a typical Douro Field Blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and others. The grapes for Niepoort 2004 Colheita Port were trodden in “lagares” at Vale de Mendiz and later the Port was matured in small old oak casks at Niepoort’s lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia. Please note that Colheita Port does not need decanting.
