Description

Niepoort Crusted Port is a superb Port which goes some way to bridging the gap between Late Bottled Vintage and Vintage Port styles. Traditionally, Crusted Port, is selected from wines of Vintage quality, from two or three harvests, which undergo no fining or filtration prior to bottling and are only released three years after bottling. This is the 4th Edition of Niepoort Crusted Port which was bottled in December 2014.

Niepoort was founded as a Port House in 1842 and today is run by the 5th generation brother and sister Dirk and Verena Niepoort. This respected and historic Portuguese winery is known for its exceptional Port wines and table wines. The Niepoort family’s dedication to quality, innovation, and sustainable practices has helped them maintain their reputation as one of the top wine producers in Portugal and beyond. Dirk Niepoort joined his father, Rolf Niepoort, in the family business in 1987 with the challenge of innovating while upholding cherished traditions. One significant initial stride was acquiring their first vineyards: Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril in Cima Corgo, a region renowned for producing top-quality Port Wines. They planted 15 hectares of new vineyards and meticulously cared for 10 hectares of 60-year-old vines. This ownership of Quintas and vineyards in the Douro marked a pivotal moment in their journey in the world of Port wine and laid the foundation for the creation of Niepoort wines. They remain one of the smallest, yet very high quality, Port shippers.

This 4th edition bottling of Niepoort Crusted Port is blend of Ports. The grapes are sourced mainly from Niepoort’s Pisca vineyard, several vineyards in Vale de Mendiz harvested in 2011, along with a couple of small vineyard parcels from Casal de Loivos high up above Pinhão from the 2012 harvest. Grapes were foot-trodden with 100% stems in lagares in Vale de Mendiz prior to being aged in large old wooden vats in our cellars. The production was small, with a total of 10 000 Litres.

Vintage Ports and Crusted Ports form sediment in the bottle as they age. This sediment is also known as crust and the Port “forms a crust”, hence the name. These styles of Port require decanting. Read more about why and how to decant Port here.

As Niepoort Crusted Port is bottled unfiltered, it is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Tasting Notes

From Niepoort: “With a brilliant dark red appearance and good depth on the rim, the wine also shows classic aromas of dark plums, cherries and mint. On the palate, grainy tannins dominate along with dark chocolate notes. It is a great blend of years, with the 2011 component dominating, but offering a more seductive and exuberant character compared to the finer 2011 Niepoort Vintage. Certainly a superb wine to drink now or to age for several decades.”

Food Pairing

Try with chocolate desserts, especially dark chocolate. Cheddar, Gouda and Brie cheese. Spicy dishes with red meat, game, lamb, veal, and pepper steak.
