Description

Niepoort Drink Me Kali is the latest special edition of Drink Me. Drink me is part of Dirk Niepoort’s “Fabulous” range of wines. The range was created to be a pleasant, easy drinking red wine, yet retaining the complexity, mineral notes and great depth usually found in the classic Douro wines.

Niepoort was founded as a Port House in 1842 and today it is run by the 5th generation winemaker Dirk van der Niepoort. Whilst Niepoort is very well known for their superb Port wines, they are now considered to be one of the top Portuguese producers of table wines. Dirk really was at the forefront of the Portuguese wine revolution. He first started experimenting with wines in 1990 and released his first red table wine, Niepoort Redoma Tinto in 1991. Dirk continues to experiment and innovate and produces some fantastic Douro wines as well as from relatively newly acquired vineyards in Bairrada and Dao. All of the red wines, with the exception of the Niepoort Charme, are made at the futuristic winery at Quinta do Napole. Charme is made with the Ports at Vale de Mendiz.

The Fabulous range of wines gives Dirk a chance to play around with labels. In 2004 Dirk and his designer Cordula Allesandri created Fabelhaft for the German market which featured a storyboard label. Since then there have been many labels, each different for different markets including: Norway (Fabelaktig), Allez Santé (Belgium), ETO CARTA (Japan), Drink Me (UK) and Twisted (USA). The Drink Me Kali is named after the animated short film “Kali The Little Vampire” and the label feature a different shadow puppet character and playing card marking in each square.

Drink Me Kali is produced from vineyards located in the Douro region. The grape varieties are Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Amarela. After harvest, the grapes were sent to Niepoort’s Quinta de Nápoles where the grapes were carefully destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures for approximately one week. A portion of the wine was matured in French oak barriques whereas the rest of the wine remained in stainless steel for about 6 months.
