Niepoort Drink Me Nat’Cool Baga is part of Dirk Niepoort’s range of “Naturally Cool” wines. Described as “Cool and Funky”, it represents an innovative concept initiated by Niepoort, in which various producers come together to create light and easy-to-drink wines. This 100% Baga from the Bairraida wine-growing region was the first release in the Nat’Cool range, it has since been joined by wines from Dao, Navarra in Spain as well as some white wines too.
There is no definition of what what a Naturally Cool wine is but, a bit like Fight Club, Dirk has come up with his own set of rules:
Niepoort Drink Me Nat’Cool Baga was the first of Niepoort’s Nat’Cool releases (there is also a white wine). It is 100% Baga from the Bairrado DOC. The wine is produced at Niepoort’s Quinta de Baixo, an estate he bought in 2012 to satisfy his love of the Baga grape variety. Dirk has been active in the region since the 1990s with joint ventures with Casa da Saima and Portuguese wine legend Luis Pato amongst others. Baga from Bairrado is quite often made in a full-bodied, dry red wine style. The idea here is to demonstrate a different and elegant side of the Baga grape.
The Baga is hand harvested from vineyards at Quinta de Baixo which are planted on chalky clay soils. The vineyards have various ages between 40 and 100 years old and are situated at an altitudes of 80-100m. Vinification is in stainless steel, the wine undergoes malolactic and is then rested for another 6 months in vat before release. Bottled unfiltered.
Served in a 1 litre bottle, because a normal bottle is not enough! Can be served chilled.
Niepoort Drink Me Nat’Cool Baga is light in colour and offers a frank and expressive aromatic profile full of freshness and floral notes. It showcases the character of the Baga grape variety and Bairrada region superbly, with beautiful aromas of strawberries, dried roses and some spice. These notes are embedded in a minerality reminiscent of the vines’ calcareous soils and unmistakeable Atlantic climate. Fresh, direct and very seductive, this wine is light on its feet and so easy to drink, it will entice you to have another glass. It makes a very versatile food wine – just add a good meal and good friends! Serve chilled. Pure pleasure! Naturally cool!
Drink with lighter, simple dishes, cold cuts, charcuterie or medium to mature hard cheeses.
