Niepoort Ruby Port is the entry point into discovering Dirk Niepoort’s range of Port wines. An excellent quality Ruby Port. This is exactly the same Port as Niepoort Ruby Dum Port. Niepoort believes that the colour of the port should be inspired by the “rubi stone” (instead of black dark colour Ruby).
Niepoort was founded as a Port House in 1842 and today is run by the 5th generation brother and sister Dirk and Verena Niepoort. This respected and historic Portuguese winery is known for its exceptional Port wines and table wines. The Niepoort family’s dedication to quality, innovation, and sustainable practices has helped them maintain their reputation as one of the top wine producers in Portugal and beyond. Dirk Niepoort joined his father, Rolf Niepoort, in the family business in 1987 with the challenge of innovating while upholding cherished traditions. One significant initial stride was acquiring their first vineyards: Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril in Cima Corgo, a region renowned for producing top-quality Port Wines. They planted 15 hectares of new vineyards and meticulously cared for 10 hectares of 60-year-old vines. This ownership of Quintas and vineyards in the Douro marked a pivotal moment in their journey in the world of Port wine and laid the foundation for the creation of Niepoort wines. They remain one of the smallest, yet very high quality, Port shippers.
The grapes for the Niepoort Ruby Port are sourced from low yielding old vineyards in the Cima Corgo region of Douro Valley. The grapes are predominantly trodden in old, granite lagares, prior to ageing in large wooden vats at Niepoort’s lodges in Gaia where the Port is bottled with an average age of 3 years. The wine is a typical Douro Field Blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and other grape varieties.
Niepoort Ruby is fresh, young and fruity. An expressive Port with great character. Ruby keeps well for several years, although the wine will not improve with age. No decanting is necessary since the wine contains no sediment.
Personalised Labels
As mentioned above, this is the same excellent Port as Niepoort Ruby Dum Port, part of Niepoort’s Niepoortland range of Ports, along with the Tawny Dee and others. We buy it under the plain Ruby label.
We are able to supply personalised labels for Niepoort Ruby Port, either stone-fired or with a smart wrap around label. Please see examples of labels Niepoort has produced for HMS Sultan and HMS Collingwood in the image gallery.
There is a minimum printing run, which may be prohibitive, and labels have to be approved by the The Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (IVDP).
If you would like further information about a personalised Port label for your club, society or other group, please telephone 01329 822733 or email for more information.
Niepoort Ruby Port has a dark red in colour with a fresh vibrant aroma of dark fruits which follows through on the palate along with an almost mineral character, a youthful wine with good extract and great balance, offering superb “drinkability”.
Try Niepoort Ruby Port with chocolate desserts, especially those made with dark chocolate, or try with cheeses such as Cheddar, Gouda, Brie cheese.
