Description
Niepoort Senior Tawny Port is an aged Tawny Port. It spends most of its life quietly maturing in in small barrels at the Niepoort lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia. This is a partner to the Niepoort Junior Ruby (not to be confused with Niepoort Ruby!)
Niepoort was founded as a Port House in 1842 and today is run by the 5th generation brother and sister Dirk and Verena Niepoort. This respected and historic Portuguese winery is known for its exceptional Port wines and table wines. The Niepoort family’s dedication to quality, innovation, and sustainable practices has helped them maintain their reputation as one of the top wine producers in Portugal and beyond. Dirk Niepoort joined his father, Rolf Niepoort, in the family business in 1987 with the challenge of innovating while upholding cherished traditions. One significant initial stride was acquiring their first vineyards: Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril in Cima Corgo, a region renowned for producing top-quality Port Wines. They planted 15 hectares of new vineyards and meticulously cared for 10 hectares of 60-year-old vines. This ownership of Quintas and vineyards in the Douro marked a pivotal moment in their journey in the world of Port wine and laid the foundation for the creation of Niepoort wines. They remain one of the smallest, yet very high quality, Port shippers.
Niepoort Senior Tawny Port is a field blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and others grape varieties sourced from vineyards in Vale do Pinhão and Ferrão with an average vine age of 30 years. After the grapes are hand-picked, they are then foot trodden in traditional stone lagares. After the wine has been produced it is then shipped to the Niepoort lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia where it ages in small oak barrels. The small barrels enable a soft and light contact with air through the pores of the wood, which results in a slow oxidation process over the years. The average age of the blend is 7 years.
Tasting Notes
Niepoort Senior Tawny has a brick red tawny appearance; a velvety mouth feel with a fine blend of old wines giving richness balanced with younger wines giving freshness and complexity.
Food Pairing
Niepoort Senior can be served at room temperature or slightly chilled, and is quite delicious on its own or with many dishes. Try it with creamy cheeses (like brie) or nutty cheeses (like strong cheddar), or desserts like treacle sponge, sticky toffee pudding or just with nuts and dried fruit.
