Niepoort Tawny Dee Port is part of the Niepoortland range of Ports from Dirk Niepoort which also includes Niepoort Ruby Dum and Niepoort Rabbit Dry White.
Niepoort is a family company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port. “Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match.” (James Suckling, Vintage Port).
During the ageing process Tawny Dee acquires great wisdom and subtleness through ageing in small old oak casks exhibiting discrete characters of dried stone fruits. The grapes for this Niepoort Tawny Dee Port are sourced from vineyards in Vinha da Pisca, Vale do Pinhoa and Ferrao with an average age of over 30 years old. The grapes are harvested by hand and are predominantly foot-trodden in old stone lagares. The wine is aged in small, old oak casks of 550L at Niepoort’s lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia. The wine has an average age of over three and a half years at release.
The range of Niepoortland labels were designed by artist Regina Pessoa and are inspired by Lewis Carrol. The Ruby Dum and Tawny Dee obviously take their names from twins Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee from Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland. The White Rabbit was always a very special character and in 2013 the white rabbit gains its own label with Rabbit Dry White.
Niepoort Tawny Dee is brick red / tawny in colour, with delicate nutty aromas and a hint of dried fruits. On the palate, very well balanced with a youthful fruity, luscious character, which integrates well with a long spirity finish.
From Niepoort: Nuts and nut-based desserts (pecan pie, fruitcake, hazelnut torte), fruitbased tarts (apple pie), and burnt sugar preparations (crème brûlée, crème caramel). Non-blue cheeses (Manchego, smoked Gouda, Gruyere).
