Niepoort Tiara Branco is a fresh, elegant style white wine. Tiara is an unusual wine for the Douro region: its great freshness, intensity and ageing potential come from very old, high vineyards (an average of 60 years old) which are planted at more than 600 metres above sea level.
Niepoort was founded as a Port House in 1842 and today is run by the 5th generation brother and sister Dirk and Verena Niepoort. Whilst they are style very well known for their superb Port wines, they are now considered to be one of the top Portuguese producers of table wines. Dirk really was at the forefront of the Portuguese wine revolution. He first started experimenting with wines in 1990 and releases his first wine, Niepoort Redoma Tinto in 1991. Dirk continues to experiment and innovate and produces some fantastic Douro wines as well as from relatively newly acquired vineyards in Bairrada. He also makes some very fine white wines.
Niepoort Tiara is a blend of Codega, Rabigato, Donzelinho, Viosinho, Cercial and other grape varieties. The grapes are harvested by hand and after hand sorting the grapes were total destemmed and quickly pressed during the night (to ensure freshness is retained). The juice was left to settle 24 hours. Following this the fermentation took place in small stainless steel tanks with fine lees for more than four months; malolactic fermentation was blocked after alcoholic fermentation.
