Payva 56 Barricas is a red wine, 100% Tempranillo, bottled as a crianza from the Ribera del Guadiana DO of Extremadura.
Bodegas Martinez Payva is a family business with a long tradition of more than five generations growing the vine and making wines. It is owned by the Martinez Payva family who have been growing grapes and making wine since 1876. They have been instrumental in the introduction of new cultivation techniques and grape varietals in the area.
Payva 56 Barricas Crianza is made from the estate’s oldest Tempranillo vines from vineyards with clay soils. When the grapes have reached full maturity they are harvested by hand and into 18 kg crates and transported to the winery as quickly as possible to ensure that they arrive in best condition possible. After fermentation the wine undergoes a protracted period of skin contact to help extract tannins. There is a gentle pressing before the wine is run off into new 300 litre barrels from Eastern Europe. The wine is then aged for 12 months prior to bottling without filtration. The wine is then rested in bottle for 18 months prior to release.
