Pena del Valle Seleccion de Familia Barrica is a Spanish red wine bottled as a Vino de la Tierra de Extremadura.

Bodegas Pena del Valle was founded in n 2003 by Miguel García de la Peña and Juan del Valle. The two partners are childhood friends and were classmates at San José de Villafranca de los Barros School (Badajoz). Miguel comes from a family of winegrowers and has over thirty years experience in viticulture and winemaking, whilst Juan spent many years in the food sector as a sales and marketing manager. They are winemaker and manager respectively.

Pena del Valle has two vineyards – the 200 hectare Don Rodrigo and the 100 hectare Finca El Cubillo. The Don Rodrigo vineyard is situated at 400 metres above sea level and is located near the town of Almendralejo in the provice of Badajoz. The vineyard micro-climate is influenced by the nearby Bonhabal stream. The soils here are composed of clay and sedimentary rock. The second vineyard, El Cubillo is located on the banks of the river Guadajira and has a cooler climate with more pebbly soils. The Pena del Valle winery is located at the Don Rodrigo vineyard which means the grapes grown there only have to make a short journey to from the vineyard and arrive fresh and in good condition. The vineyards are planted with a mixture of local and international grape varieties – Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha, Merlot, Sauvignon-Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Macabeo and Cayetana.

The grapes for Pena del Valle Seleccion de Familia Barrica are sourced from both vineyards and it is made from Syrah and Tempranillo grapes. The wine is aged in 225 litre French oak barrels (a combination of old and new) for 7 months. The wine is aged in a fully-equipped and air-conditioned chamber, equipped with air-conditioning units and humidifiers that provide this room with optimum conditions, regardless of the weather – which can get pretty hot in Extremadura!
