Pio Cesare Barbaresco Bricco di Treiso DOCG is a Barbaresco sourced from 13.55 hectares of “Il Bricco” vineyards that Cesare own in the village of Trieso. Barbaresco is, of course, 100% Nebbiolo but the vineyard is also planted with Dolcetto d’Alba, Chardonnay, Langhe Rosso, Sauvignon. The vineyard has an elevation of 300 metres with a south and south-western exposure. It has the coolest climate and the highest elevation of the entire Barbaresco region. The soil is mainly limestone and portion of clay and limestone. Wines produce here tend to have elegant tannins, ripe fruit and great aging potential.
Pio Cesare is an historic family-owned estate named after its founder Cesare Pio, who established the business in 1881. It is based in Alba in the heart of the Piemonte region, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The surrounding hills provide a handful of ideal exposures for grape growing with unique micro-climates. The confluence of cold Alpine air with warm maritime moisture regularly creates a misty glow, or “nebbia”, over these foothills, hence Nebbiolo, the great red variety of the region. Pio Cesare were one of the very first Italian wine producers to export Barolo to the UK in the 1950s and played a huge part in popularising Barolo as a quality wine. Today the company is run by Cesare’s great grandson, Pio Boffa, who continues to combine tradition and innovation to highly-acclaimed, high quality Piedmontese wines. It was Pio Boffa that introduced the limited range of single vineyard wines that include Barolo Ornato, Barbaresco Il Bricco, Barbera Fides and Piodilei Chardonnay.
The grapes for Pio Cesare Barbaresco Bricco di Treiso are hand-harvested, pressed and fermented on the skins for up to 25 days at 25° to 26°C in stainless steel. Some of the the wine is then aged in mid-toasted French oak barrels (a third of which are new) for 30 months.
Garnet in colour, with perfumes of dark berries and summer fruits with a touch of sweet spice, liquorice and herbal notes which follow to the palate. Rich, with delicious juicy fruit, fine tannins and a long, expressive finish with a touch of spice from the new oak.
Serve with red meat dishes, game or seasonal truffle, mature cheeses.
