Pio Cesare Nebbiolo Langhe is a red wine from the Langhe DOC in Piedmont. The 100% Nebbiolo grapes are sourced from Pio Cesare’s family vineyards, mainly from those in Diano d’Alba, La Morra, Collaretto and Lirano in Serralunga d’Alba and Rocche di Massalupo in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio
This historic historic family-owned estate is named after its founder Cesare Pio, who established the business in 1881. It is based in Alba in the heart of the Piemonte region, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The surrounding hills provide a handful of ideal exposures for grape growing with unique micro-climates. The confluence of cold Alpine air with warm maritime moisture regularly creates a misty glow, or “nebbia”, over these foothills, hence Nebbiolo, the great red variety of the region.
As well as the vineyard regions mentioned above, the blend is enriched by a small proportion of grapes from the Barbaresco and Barolo region, which provide body, structure and a long ageing potential. Nebbiolo grapes for the Pio Cesare Nebbiolo Langhe DOC are hand-picked and gently pressed and fermented at 25 to 26°C. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, with skin contact for 12 days. The wine is then aged in medium-toasted French oak for 20 months: 20% in barriques, 80% in 20-50 hectolitre casks.
Pio Cesare Nebbiolo has fragrant ripe berry fruits and floral touches, with rounded and well integrated tannins that give this wine structure and longevity. The wine is rich, full-bodied, with a hint of gentle toasting.
Ideal with steak tartare, truffle, mushroom dishes, duck, guinea fowl, veal, braised beef, cheese
