Description

Plymouth Sloe Gin is a traditional sloe gin made by gently steeping the finest sloes in Plymouth Gin, soft, pure Dartmoor water and sugar for approximately 4 months according to a unique 1883 recipe.

Plymouth Gin is a style of gin that by law can only be produced in Plymouth, England, it being a Protected Geographical Indication within the European Union. The Plymouth Gin Distillery (the Black Friars Distillery) is the only gin distillery located in Plymouth in what was once a Dominican Order monastery built in 1431. It has been in operation since 1793. The recipe for Plymouth Gin itself dates from 1793; it comprises seven botanicals, or natural flavourings, blended in a proportion know only to a privileged few.

Sloe Gin was developed as a way of using the fruit of the Blackthorn Bush, sloe berries. Sloes, as they are, are inedible but soaking the fruit in gin and adding sugar made a very drinkable beverage. The sugar level is deliberately kept low in Plymouth Sloe Gin to allow the flavours of the fruit to to come through whilst allowing its natural dry acidity to show too. All natural.

No added colourings or flavourings.

Tasting Notes

Clear character of mellow sloe berries, fruity with notes of sweet cherry and a slight scent of almonds
Smooth, fruity and full bodied, with a balanced sweetness and acidity
