Domaine Seguin Pouilly Fume is a white wine from the Loire Valley, 100% Sauvignon Blanc. It is made by the small family owned wine estate of Domaine Seguin located 1 km to the east of Pouilly-sur-Loire. The estate produces two more Pouilly Fume wines, the Cuvee 3 and the Cuvee Prestige.
The origins of Domaine Seguin stretch back to the 19th Century when the Roumier family began farming 1.5 hectares of vines in the village of Les Berthiers. Ernst Seguin married into the Roumier family in 1905 and purchased some more vines in Le Bouchot increasing the size of the domain. Now on the sixth generation, the company remains family owned and the Seguin family have increases the size of the domaine to 19 hectares, all located in the Pouilly Fume AOC.
At Seguin, the family believe that the production of a good wine begins in the vineyard. The family work (pruning, disbudding, tying-up etc.) in the vineyards themselves which enables them to keep a close eye on the vines and the grapes. The gaps between the rows of vines are ploughed or grassed regularly to encourage good biodiversity and healthy soils. The family have a gravity fed winery which is set over three levels, everything is moved via gravity removing the need for pumping. This is much more gentle on the wines.
The family have 22 plots of Sauvignon Blanc vines located on a variety of soils including limestone, Kimmeridgian marls and flint which help to produce the characters of fruitiness, aromatic strength and minerality in the wines. Domaine Seguin Pouilly Fume is blend of grapes from each of the three terroir types – 60% calcareous, 30% Kimmeridgian and 10% silex. Each plot undergoes regular berry sampling to ensure that the grapes are harvested at optimum ripeness. Domaine Seguin Pouilly Fume undergoes a traditional style vinification for 3 to 5 weeks in temperature controlled stainless steel vats which preserves the fruity aromas of the wine. The wine is aged on the fine lees for 3 to 6 months, depending on how the vintage behaves. Finally the wine is racked and blended prior to bottling.
Also available in half-bottles.
Domaine Seguin Pouilly Fumé has a powerful fruity Sauvignon nose with aromas of citrus and fruit whites (pear, white peach) as well as a mineral note typical of the appellation. The palate is intense yet round and finishes crisply and firmly without sharpness.
Domaine Seguin Pouilly Fume pairs remarkably well with seafood, smoked salmon, fish with white butter sauce, and goat cheese. This wine is best consumed young but can be kept for a few years. It should be served between 8 and 10° C (45 to 50° F)
