Pussers Gunpowder Proof Spiced is a brand new expression of spiced rum launched by Pusser’s Rum. It was first launched in the UK market in December 2020.
Pussers Rum is produced by Demerara Distillers Ltd in Guyana and is named after the Royal Navy Slang for a purser, a ship’s supply officer. For more than 300 years sailors of the Royal Navy were issued a daily rum ration or “tot”, a highly welcome daily comfort when one was away from home for many months. The Rum Ration was abolished on the 31st July 1970 (“The Black Day”) and the Pusser’s Rum name quietly lay dormant until 1979 when the entrepreneur Charles Tobias sought to resurrect the Pusser’s Rum tradition. Tobias managed to obtain the rights and the blending information from the Admiralty, set up Pussers Rum Ltd on Tortola and, in 1980, began selling Pusser’s Rum to the public for the very first time. In return The Royal Navy Sailor’s Fund, a naval charity more commonly called the “Tot Fund” receives a substantial donation from the sale of each bottle of British Navy Pusser’s Rum.
Pussers Gunpowder Proof Spiced is based upon the Gunpowder Proof Rum – this this is a 3 year old blend rum produced in column and pot stills in Guyana which is bottled with an ABV of 54.5%. The rum is filtered and aged for a minimum of three years in once used charred oak bourbon barrels and further enhanced with a a unique blend of Caribbean spices – a secret blend of course, but I detect banana, vanilla and chocolate (probably other bits and pieces I can’t remember) with. There is plenty of banana on the nose with chocolate on the palate, but the Gunpowder rum character still comes through.
To those of you that remember the Pusser’s red label spiced rum, this is nothing like it! This, in my humble opinion, is far, far superior.
From Pusser’s Rum:
Colour: Clear, dark, coppery amber with burnished copper highlights.
Nose: Molasses, Banana, Chocolate, Vanilla, Cinnamon and mild ginger.
Finish: Long and extremely smooth finish despite its high alcohol content.
