Description

Pussers Rum Select Aged 151 is the “Green Label” Pussers Rum. This overproof rum is bottled at 151 Proof, i.e. 75.5% ABV. It has been available for many years in other markets, such as Germany, but it has only recently been relaunched in the UK.

Pussers Rum is produced by Demerara Distillers Ltd in Guyana and is named after the Royal Navy Slang for a purser, a ship’s supply officer. For more than 300 years sailors of the Royal Navy were issued a daily rum ration or “tot”, a highly welcome daily comfort when one was away from home for many months. The Rum Ration was abolished on the 31st July 1970 (“The Black Day”) and the Pusser’s Rum name quietly lay dormant until 1979 when the entrepreneur Charles Tobias sought to resurrect the Pusser’s Rum tradition. Tobias managed to obtain the rights and the blending information from the Admiralty, set up Pussers Rum Ltd on Tortola and, in 1980, began selling Pusser’s Rum to the public for the very first time. In return The Royal Navy Sailor’s Fund, a naval charity more commonly called the “Tot Fund” receives a substantial donation from the sale of each bottle of British Navy Pusser’s Rum.

Pussers Rum Select Aged 151 “Green Label” is a 100% Demerara, Guyanese rum that has been aged for a minimum of 3 years in once-used ex-Bourbon casks. One of the main components of the the rum is rum produced from the Port Mourant still, the legendary double wooden pot still at the Diamond Distillery (owned by Demerara Distillers Ltd). It bottled at “cask strength” as close as possible to the rums that would have been shipped to Royal Naval Stores in Deptford, Gosport and Devonport for blending and dilution to proof. The blend of rums in this special rum is produced in accordance with Admiralty regulations for rum in effect at the time that the Royal navy discontinued the daily issue in 1970.

Tasting Notes

From Pusser’s

Colour: Rich chestnut mahogany colour, crystal clear clarity.

Nose: The aroma is a burst of classic Demerara with marmalade, marzipan, cinnamon and tobacco.

Body: Full and very rounded with notes of syrupy spice and fruit, leather, dried sultanas and soft oak.

Finish: Warm, smooth, long and memorable.

Serving Suggestions

Obviously this overproof rum is very strong at 75.5% ABV, try with a few drops of water or an ice cube, this will help open up the aromas and flavours. If you are brave, or perhaps foolish enough, drink it neat, but take care!

  1. dominic

Pussers Rum Select Aged 151 “Green Label” is a clear dark golden burnt orange / brown colour. The nose is powerful, rich and complex. The high alcohol level is apparent (don’t nose this one too hard!). The dominant aromas are of milk chocolate, burnt sugar, molasses, toffee and baking spices with a feint, orange / citrus (perhaps bergamot) note. This is a very powerful rum in the mouth and is immediately mouth-filling and rich. There is a certain amount of burn and warmth, as to be expected for a rum bottled at 75.5%, but this considered, it is remarkably smooth. The palate is dominated by flavours of brown sugar and dark molasses. The initial attack is sweet but with a slight bitterness but the rum actually finishes dry with a very, very long aftertaste.

Nose, powerful fumes first, allowed to breath for a while then dark brown demerara sugar, cream, raisins, very slight overripe bananas (not as strong as the new spiced pussers)…….more brown sugar.

Taste, full on powerful wow, burnt toffee, cream, creamy toffee, old raisins, warm black coffee, ending in coffee with a very slight hint of banana then dying into a slight metallic taste (not in an unpleasant way).

This is another big thumbs up for Pussers, strong but smooth, great sipping or mixing rum, top quality rum, how a rum should be.
