Description

Quinta da Cassa Douro Reserva is a red wine made by Rui Madeira at Quinta da Cassa in the Douro Superior. The vineyard is located near the viewpoint of S. Salvador do Mundo (one of the best spots of Douro valley) and the mythical Cachão da Valeira.

Winemaker Rui Roboredo Madeira and his family own and run five estates as Quinta da Cassa. These are Quinta da Pedra Escrita, Quinta do Coa, Beyra and Quinta de Fafide in the Douro and Beyra in Beira Interior. These come together under the umbrella name of “Rui Roboredo Madeira – Vinhos do Vale do Douro” in 2013. Rui Madeira’ winemaking philosophy is to make wine from indigenous grape varieties (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Jaen et al.) which have a true sense of the local terroir.

Quinta da Cassa is located on the left bank of the Douro, amongst many grade “A” vineyards, the vineyards where the very best Vintage Ports come from. The vineyards are planted in ‘patamares’ (a modern version of the traditional stone terraces) on schistous soils with a west and northerly exsposure. The vineyards are planted with classic Douro grape varieties including Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional.

Quinta da Cassa Douro Reserva DOC is a blend of  40% Touriga Franca, 40% Touriga Nacional and 20% Tinta Roriz. The grapes are 100% hand harvested, grapes are crushed and destemmed followed by cold maceration for 48 hours and then alcoholic fermentation for 15 days. There is then 15 days of temperature controlled malolactic fermentation. A portion of the wine is aged for 18 months in 2nd and 3rd fill French oak casks.
