Description

Quinta do Noval 2017 Vintage Port is an exceptional Vintage Port from an illustrious Port House.

There are records of Quinta do Noval stretching back as far as 1715 but it was when Port shipper António José da Silva acquired the property in 1894, and replanted all the vineyards after the devastation by Phylloxera, that Quinta do Noval became a name to contend with. Noval became super famous for their legendary 1931 vintage Port, which has been described as one of the most sensational Ports of the 20th Century. They also lay claim to being the first producer to create a Late Bottled Vintage, although, there are a couple of other producers who claim this too! In 1993 the estate was acquired by  AXA Millésimes and joined a prestigious family of wine estates including Disznókő in Tokaj, Hungary, and in France Château Pichon Baron in Pauillac, Château Suduiraut in Sauternes, Château Petit-Village in Pomerol and Domaine de l’Arlot in Burgundy.

The 2017 Port Vintage is of exceptional quality. The vintage was characterised by intense heat with record low levels of rainfall. Flowering and bud burst developed under good conditions and the high daytime temperatures and cool nights in August and September allowed for a gradual and even ripening. Harvest was exceptionally early, with some producers harvesting at the beginning of August. The harvest was around 20 to 30% down on a normal harvest, basically due to water stress. So, 2017 produced a smaller quantity of excellent fruit. Conditions were similar to 1945, an extremely highly regarded vintage.  Expect powerful, intense and complex wines with great aromas and freshness.

Christian Seely, MD of Quinta do Noval says, “I consider these wines to be among the best that I have known during my time at Quinta do Noval. The decision to declare them was a very easy one. As is well known, at Quinta do Noval, we do not hesitate to make small declarations of our Vintage Ports even in years which are not being generally declared, provided that the quality is excellent. But the 2017 is clearly an exceptional year which I believe will be remembered as one of the historic Vintage Port declarations of Quinta do Noval.”

Harvest started much earlier than usual due to the weather: from 17 August for the white wines and 21 August for the reds and the Ports, lasting until 28 September, with high temperatures and a total absence of rain.

Grape Varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Sousão, Tinta Roriz

Vinification: Grapes are trodden by foot to obtain the must, then during fermentation macerate to obtain the best possible extraction in the lagares, the traditional stone vats from the Quinta.

Maturation: It is matured for 18 months in wooden casks in the air- conditioned cellars of the Quinta, at the demarcated region of the Douro Valley before bottling.
