Description

Quinta do Vesuvio 2015 Vintage Port is a very complex, powerful and aromatic Vintage Port from the superb 2015 vintage.

Quinta Do Vesuvio is one of the iconic Douro wine estates and there are records of the property stretching back to 1565. More recently, during the early nineteenth century, Quinta do Vesuvio was purchased by the well-known Port grower António Bernard Ferreira. The estate eventually came into the owership of Ferreira’s daughter in law, Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, who built the main grand house and chapel and also bottled and sold the estate’s wine under the Vesuvio name – this was unheard of in the nineteenth century. With the arrival of Phylloxera, the estate focused more on olives, almonds and oranges. Quinta do Vesuvio passed through family hands until is was acquired by the Symington family in 1989 and whom immediately set about restoring and renovating the estate. It is now considered to be the family’s flagship Single Quinta.

Quinta do Vesuvio 2015 Vintage Port is from a blend of grapes from three principal vineyards. Touriga Nacional was harvested mainly from the quinta’s Quinta Nova and Raposa vineyards, planted at altitudes between 350 and 470 metres, predominantly north and northwest facing. In 2015 the finest Touriga Franca was harvested from the Vale da Teja vineyards, predominantly northwest facing and planted between 150 and 200 metres, some lying near the river. The Touriga Nacional and Franca was complemented by a small quantity of Sousão, drawn from a more granitic area of the Quinta, which brings acidity and minerality to the blend, beautifully balancing this powerful and structured Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port.

Tasting Notes

Dark inky black colour. The nose is aromatic with hints of black and red fruit, plums and a touch of smoke. This is a dark and brooding nose with some freshness with floral notes and menthol and eucalyptus nuances. The palate is rich and full with lots of blackcurrant flavours, black fruit and a hint of chocolate and spice. Big and grippy. This is a very powerful and complex, sweet wine – Dominic Lockyer, barrel sample, tasted July 2017.

From Symington Family Estates: “A powerhouse of a wine with fresh, dark fruit aromas, rounded off with some lovely esteva (rockrose) and violets fragrance. Taught and muscular in the mouth with good grip from the schist tannins. Long and intense with superb structure.”
