Our Rioja and Ribera del Duero Wine Sampler is a 6 bottle mixed case of red wines from two of the most famous wine-growing regions of Spain: Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Both regions are dominated by the Tempranillo grape variety but produce markedly different wines.

There are three diferent styles of Rioja included: Urbina is a very traditional light style, Valdelacierva is a more modern, fuller-bodied style and the Alfar, produced by Valdelacierva, is small production and the most full-bodied style. The two Ribera del Duero wines from 12 Linajes are spicier, drier wines. All of these are great food wines.

Urbina Crianza Rioja, Bodegas Urbina

Urbina Crianza Rioja is a balanced and complex red Rioja produced by the small, traditional, family-owned Rioja House of Urbina Vinos. It is a blend of 95% Tempranillo (from 20 year old vines) blended with 5% Graciano and Mazuelo, all harvested by hand. 12 months in American oak casks and a minimum of 6 months in bottle before release. 

Intense nose with mellow ripe strawberry, vanilla, coconut from the American oak and spices reminiscent of white pepper. The palate is well-balanced and complex with blackcurrant, spicy notes of incense and musk, combined with  more black fruit. There are slight herbaceous flavours with splash more cream, spice and more black fruit. Good structure and persistence, refreshing acidity. 

Valdelacierva Crianza “5 Renques” Rioja DOC

Valdelacierva Crianza is 100% Tempranillo rom vines with an average age of 30 to 45 years old. “Renques” is the name given to a row of vines. The wine is matured for 15 months in new French oak.

The nose is typical of the Rioja Alavesa region with aromas of wild red fruits such as currants and raspberries, mineral notes and spicy, toasted notes of good French Oak. The palate has a sweet attack. It is powerful, velvety and full bodied with silky tannins followed by a balanced mouthfeel and a long, rich aftertaste.

Valdelacierva Reserva Rioja DOCa

Made with 100% Tempranillo grapes from vines with an average age of over 50 years old. The wine is matured in a combination of 70% American and 30% French second and third fill barrels for 24 months followed by 12 months in the bottle prior to release.

Hints of spice, toffee and a slightly smokey background hint. The wine has a sweetish attack and is broad on the palate. There are more black fruit notes, blackcurrant and a hint of vanilla. The wine is velvety and rich yet structured and elegant at the same time. Good, persistent finish.

Made from a special selection of grapes and is only produced in exceptional vintages. From vines with an average age of 40 years old, the grapes for Alfar are handpicked and undergo a rigorous selection. The wine is then matured in new French oak barrels for 10 months, with a further minimum of 12 months in bottle, prior to release.

Intense red colour with a hint of violet. The nose has aromas of black fruit, blackberry with hints of toasty, vanilla oak from the barrel ageing and a hint of liquorice. The black fruit and vanilla naunces follow on to the palate which is creamy and well-structured with soft, mellow tannins and a long finish

12 Linajes Crianza, DO Ribera del Duero

The grapes for the 12 Linajes Crianza are 100%  hand-harvested Tempranillo. The wine is allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation and is then aged in a combination of new (60%) and second fill French and American oak barrels for 12 months followed by another 12 months in bottle prior to release.

Dark, ruby red colour. The nose is intense with aromas of vanilla, dark fruits and toasty oak. The palate is well-structured and complex with mature dark and red berry fruit, hints of oak, velvety mouthfeel and subtle tannins. Good long aftertaste.

12 Linajes Reserva, DO Ribera del Duero

Made from 100% Tempranillo grapes sourced vineyards located at altitudes of between 905 and 960 metres and which are over 80 years old. The wine is aged for 24 months in 70% new French oak, 15% second fill and 15% third fill barrels and 18 months in bottle prior to release.

Complex nose with aromas of confit berry fruit, dark cherries with subtly smokey and spicy notes. It is powerful in the mouth with well-balance and silky tannins, more dark berry fruits and a hints of spicy. Long lingering finish.
