Roughstock Montana Straight Rye Whiskey is made at the Roughstock Distillery which is located at the base of the Bridger Mountain Range in beautiful southwestern Montana.
When Roughstock was founded in 2008 by Bryan Schultz there had not been a distillery in Montana for over 100 years. In 2009 the distillery took delivery of some copper stills from Vendome and distillation began. Roughstock make whisky from different grains, they make malt whisky, wheat whisky and a rye whiskey (as well as a bourbon). These 100% single grain mash bills allow the true expression of the invidual grain types in their whiskies. So Roughstock Straight Rye Whiskey is made from 100% rye, grain mash, mixed with pure mountain water. After fermentation in open-top old growth Oregon fir fermentation tanks, the wort is double distilled in traditional copper stills. After distillation, only the sweet, clean heart of the distillate is placed in fine grain virgin American white oak barrels that have been toasted and heavily charred.
All of Roughstock whisky is handcrafted and exclusively small batch, a western-style of whisky made using only locally grown grains. Roughstock have a temperature controlled barrel warehouse and the frequent high pressure / low pressure weather systems of the local mountain region means that the whisky interaction with the oak barrels is speeded up and they can age their whiskies in a relatively short time compared to other climates.
