Royal Tokaji Late Harvest Tokay, unlike other Tokay wine, is made from ripe, sweet, late-harvested grapes rather than grapes that have been affected by noble rot. The Royal Tokaji Wine Company pioneered the renaissance of Tokaji after the fall of Communism in 1989. A group of foreign investors, including Hugh Johnson and Peter Vinding-Diers, formed the company in cooperation with 63 growers in Mád, the Hungarian village which friends jested was named in anticipation of their joint venture. This wine was previously labelled as Áts Cuvée, named after Royal Tokaji’s Winemaker of the Year 2006, Károly Áts. It is currently labelled as Mad Cuvée in the USA but it is called Royal Tokaji Late Harvest Tokay in the UK and the rest of the world. Royal Tokaji Late Harvest Tokay is made from a blend of Furmint, Harslevelu and Muscat de Lunel grape varieties. This is a lighter and fresher style of dessert wine compared to other Tokay and is designed for early drinking.
