Salcombe Start Point Gin is a London Dry Gin made in Devon. Located at The Boathouse, Island Street, the Salcombe Distillery Co. is situated amongst the many boat builders and boat sheds of Salcombe and all things yacht-y.
The co-founders of the Salcombe Distillery Co. Angus and Howard first met whilst working as sailing instructors and found that they shared, not only a love of sailing, but also a good gin and tonic. After a few diversions Angus and Howard met up again in 2014 and decided it would be good idea to produce a gin, the Island Street location was secured and the distillery built in 2015. The very first gin, the Start Point, was produced in small 60 litre batches and was first released in July 2016. They also make some interesting premium gins in their “Voyager” series in conjunction with some rather famous chefs including Arabella with Michael Caines and Mischief with Mark Hix. There is also a joint project with Dirk Niepoort, a gin aged in ex Niepoort 1997 Colheita Port Casks, named Guiding Star.
Salcombe Start Point Gin is made using the “one shot” method, under the requirements of a London Dry Gin and is now distilled in a custom built 450 litre Arnold Holstein copper pot still. It is a citrus and juniper led fresh, smooth and dry style. It is made using the best English wheat spirit and pure Dartmoor water with thirteen hand sourced botanicals inspired by the historical trading routes once served by the famous Salcombe fruit schooners. The botanicals include:
Macedonian Juniper
Ruby Grapefruit Peel
Lemon Peel
Lime Peel
Coriander
Angelica Root
Orris Root
Bay Leaf
Chamomile
Cinnamon
Cubeb Pepper
Liquorice Root
Green Cardamom
The gin is names Start Point after the iconic ‘Start Point’ lighthouse which marked the beginning of the 19th century voyages of the Salcombe Fruit Schooners.
Salcombe Start Point Gin is best served on its own over ice or with a premium tonic water accompanied by a slice of red grapefruit to complement the rich and warm citrus notes. It also makes a cracking dry Martini with a twist of red grapefruit peel.
