Southern Right Pinotage is a red wine made from grapes sourced a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean mainly from Hemel en Aarde Valley and Walker Bay.
In 1994, Anthony Hamilton Russell (owner of Hamilton Russell Vineyards) founded Southern Right Cellars as a Pinotage specialist. In August 2005 some land to the west of Hamilton Russell Vineyards became available and Southern Right gained a permanent base of it own. The new winery was completed in 2009. The home of Southern Right Cellars is right outside of Hermanus, a town where people come from all over to watch the whales The longer, slower ripening period at Walker Bay affords more developed tannins and pronounced fruit aromas in this outstanding red. The wine is named after the Southern Right whales that can often be seen off Hermanus and for every bottle sold a contribution is made to the Southern Right Whale fund.
The grapes for Southern Right Pinotage are grown on low-vigour, stony, clay-rich, shale-derived soil. Fruit Origin is Hemel-en-Aarde Valley 20%, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley 44%, Walker Bay 2% and Swartland 34%. The wine is 100% barrel matured going through 100% malolactic fermentation, and barrel ageing of 9 months in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th fill French oak barrels. The 2020 Southern Right Pinotage 100% Pinotage (previous vintages sometimes had a few other grapes varieties in the blend).
Vegan and vegetarian friendly.
Southern Right Pinotage is packed with complex berry fruit, beautiful tannins and subtle wood spice. Full ripeness and the longer hang-time afforded by cooler sites, combined with the complex, more classic fruit aromas and structure resulting from clay-rich soil, make this wine a highly individual expression of South Africa’s unique grape variety.
