Description

Stanton and Killeen The Prince Iberian Blend is a red wine blend from Rutherglen made from a blend of Portuguese grape varieties. Most of you will know Stanton and Killeen for their Austrlian dessert wines, but they have always produced some very interesting red wines alongside these too.

Stanton and Killeen is a family-owned wine company located in the Rutherglen wine growing region of Australia. They are famous for their red wines and Port-style wines but are arguably most famous for the superb dessert wines they produce from Muscat and Topaque. Now in their seventh generation, the company can trace its origins back to 1850 when Timothy Stanton arrived in Australia from England in search of gold. He soon turned his attention to winemaking rather than prospecting. The two families came together when Norman Killeen married Jack Stanton’s daughter, Joan and in 1954 she gave birth to 6th generation winemaker Chris Killeen. In 1968 the business name was changed to ‘Stanton & Killeen Wines’ and thus started a new phase in the history of the winery. Today the business is owned and managed by mother-daughter team Wendy and Natasha Killeen and have around 86 acres of vineyards the oldest of which were planted in 1921.

Stanton and Killeen have 16 different grape varieties planted for table wines. Hey have found that Portuguese grape varieties show an strong affinity with the  Rutherglen soils and climate. By placing an emphasis on vineyard ecology and soil health, it has meant Stanton and Killeen’s fruit quality is the best it’s ever been and each unique vintage continues to encourage the team to make the best wine they possibly can.

Stanton and Killeen The Prince Iberian Blend 2018 is a blend of 42% Tinta Roriz, 30% Touriga Nacional, 22% Tinto Cão, Tinta Barroca. These later-ripening Portuguese varieties were co-fermented to add complexity to the nose and palate. The wine was fermented in open-top vats with hand-plunging and then transferred to 35% new and 65% one and two year old French puncheons for 11 months maturation. The larger barrel size and a long slow toast regime deliver a subtle spiciness that marries beautifully with the richness of the fruit. Some Touriga and Tinto Roriz that had been fermented separately to add complexity to the final blend.

Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
