Description

The Story Wines Westgate Vineyard Marsanne Roussanne Viognier is an exciting white wine blend made from grapes grown in the Grampians wine-growing region which is located in the state of Victoria.

The company was founded fairly recently in 2003 and the The Story Wines are a little different from some wine producers in Australia. The winery is located in the outer southern suburbs of Melbourne some two to three hours from the vineyards of the Grampians and Henty. They have various different growers in both these regions with whom they work very closely – they are normally amongst the earliest in the region to harvest their grapes thus emphasising acidity, freshness and attempting to maintain moderate alcohol levels and bright aromas. As well as vineyards in Grampians and Henty, they also work with growers in the King Valley and Heathcote.

The grapes for this wine are from the Westgate Vineyard which is situated in the hills south east of Great Western at Armstrong, on an east facing, undulating slope of red / brown sandy clay loam, with buckshot and some quartz, known as the ‘Concongella’ soil series. The vineyard was planted by the Dalkin family in 1969 but has been owned by the Morris family since 2011. The region is famous for Shiraz and when The Story Wines managed to persuade the Morris family to plant a small block of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier in 2008 it was the only Marsanne and Roussanne in the region.

Once the grapes for the The Story Wines Westgate Vineyard Marsanne Roussanne Viognier are harvested they are transported to the wine in near Melbourne. The three white grape varieties are all picked and pressed together, settled overnight and then racked to and allowed to ferment with wild yeasts in very old French puncheons and barriques. The wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation and the is then held on the gross lees for 11 months prior to bottling without any cold stabilisation or fining. 260 dozen bottles produced.

Reminscent of some of the great white wines of the Rhone Valley.
