Terrazas de los Andes Single Vineyard Las Compuertas Malbec is Terrazas’ flagship Malbec. This has now been replaced by the Terrazas de los Andes Grand Malbec in the UK.
Terrazas de los Andes was established in 1992 by Chandon Argentina, which was itself established by Champagne Moet et Chandon as their Argentine wine project in 1960. Terrazas produce superb premium wines from some of the world’s highest vineyards. The winery has been named after the terraces situated at different altitudes upon which the vines are grown. Within these unique microclimates, Terrazas de los Andes presents a range of wines that offer great fruit concentration and varietal character. Their vineyards are located in the heart of Mendoza’s Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valleys. The high-altitude climate, with its low rainfall, rocky soil, and lack of organic elements in the ground, forces vines to work hard for hydration and nutrients which helps to produce grapes with intense, vivid flavours.
The grapes for Terrazas de los Andes Single Vineyard Las Compuertas Malbec sourced from the Las Compuertas vineyard located Lujan de Cuyo in the Mendoza wine-growing region. The vineyard is situated 1067 metres above sea level (3200 ft) and the vines are ungrafted stock planted in 1929. The grapes for this wine are hand-harvested and undergo cluster and berry selection followed by gravity feeding into the fermentation tanks. The wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation with a soft maceration for 30 days combined with pigeage and delestage. The wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months with minimum of 12 bottles in bottle prior to release.
