The Ileach Cask Strength Single Islay Malt Whisky is a “secret malt” from one of the 8 whisky distilleries located on Islay and is bottled by the Vintage Malt Whisky Co, like its Islay compatriot Finlaggan, another mystery malt.
The Vintage Malt Whisky Co was founded by Brian Cook in 1992 with the vision of producing a range of malt whiskies from Scotland’s finest distilleries and to make them available to independent wine and spirit importers throughout the world. Ileach Single Malt Whisky is a essentially a young-ish Islay malt from one of the big Islay distilleries. It is is bottled at a minimum of 5 years old and the spirit is matured in a mixture of ex sherry butts and ex bourbon wood.
From the VMWC website, “In many ways this fine malt mirrors the character of Islay people- strong yet gentle, warm yet mellow, but with a maturity beyond its years. Robustly peaty, with an unmistakable breath of the seashore, the Ileach is a true “man from Islay”.”
The Ileach Cask Strength whisky is bottled at 58% abv.
A huge and peaty whisky. There are medicinal, chalky, iodine and salty, tangy coastal notes. Very round in the mouth, lingering and intense. One for the peat heads!
In 2008 the Cask Strength version was named World Whisky of the Year runner up in Jim Murrays Whisky Bible (with 97 points).
