Description

Torbreck Cuvee Juveniles is a Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz blend, a slight variation on the classic Australian “GSM” blend and was originally conceived as an homage to Cote du Rhone and “bistrot” wines, wine “best drunk in its youth, poured by the glass at your favourite restaurant.”

Torbreck Vintners was founded in 1994 by David Powell and is located at Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. The roots go back to 1992 when Powell, who was then working at Rockford, began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines, so that he could buy the fruit for his own wine. The first wine made under the Torbreck label was during the 1995 vintage, with the finished wines released in 1997. Torbreck was acquired by Pete Knight in 2008 and the senior winemaker is currently Ian Hongell. The wines are made in a style emulating those of the Rhone Valley and are made from various grapes including red grapes Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro as well as white grapes Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne.

The concept for Torbreck Cuvee Juveniles goes back to the early days of Torbreck. It is named after “Juveniles”, a ‘cult’ Parisian wine bar run by an enigmatic ex-pat Englishman, Tim Johnston. Tim is passionate promoter of the Rhone Valley and it’s wines, particularly individualist, quality minded producers. Dave Powell hit it off with Tim over the years and Torbreck began to make  the Cuvee Juveniles exclusively for the wine bar. Happily, it is now available to everyone. The label still features a painting by Tim’s daughter whose paintings adorn the walls of the wine bar.

Torbreck Cuvee Juveniles 2016 is a blend of 73% Grenache, 23% Mataro (Mourvedre) and 5% Shiraz. The fruit is sourced from most old, unirrigated vineyards located in the Gomersal, Seppeltsfield, Marananga, Moppa, Greenock and Ebenezer regions of the Barossa Valley. The vines vary in age from 40 to 150 years old. The grapes are fermented in single vineyard batches, blended in tank and allowed to go through natural malo-lactic fermentation before being bottled unfiltered and un-fined towards the end of the year. Cuvee Juveniles is completely unoaked.

Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Mataro and bolder Shiraz components.

Colour: Crimson and bright cherry hues

Nose: Red cherry and pomegranate aromas balanced by Chinese five spice and meaty notes

Palate: Medium bodied with a lithe and plush mouthfeel
