Torbreck The Descendant is a blend of Shiraz and Viognier sourced from a single vineyard which is situated next to Torbreck’s winery block on Roennfeldt Road in the Barossa Valley. The vineyard was planted in 1994 using cuttings from some of the growers’ vines used to produce their iconic RunRig – which is thought to be some of the oldest genetic vine material in Australia. Not only are the vines derived from RunRig but also the fruit and barrels have also been used to produce Runrig, hence the name “The Descendant”.
Torbreck Vintners was founded in 1994 by David Powell, who had a vision of producing high-quality, handcrafted wines that showcased the unique terroir of the Barossa Valley, and is located at Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. The roots go back to 1992 when Powell, who was then working at Rockford, began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines, so that he could buy the fruit for his own wine. The first wine made under the Torbreck label was during the 1995 vintage, with the finished wines released in 1997. Torbreck was acquired by Pete Knight in 2008 and the senior winemaker is currently Ian Hongell. Torbreck Vintners is particularly well-known for its red wines, which are mainly made from traditional Rhône grape varieties, such as Shiraz (Syrah), Grenache, and Mataro (Mourvèdre).
The vineyard for The Descendant is located in the Marananga sub region of the Barossa Valley. It is planted on deep red clay soils which produces fruit that has a glorious perfume, a savoury flavour and a satin-like texture. The Shiraz and Viognier fruit for Torbreck The Descendant is co-fermented. This was the first wine to be made in this way in the Barossa Valley. This method is now a widely used method in the Barossa. The Shiraz grapes are crushed straight on top of Viognier, which has been lightly pressed for RunRig, and the blend of fruit is then co-fermented. Maturation over 18 months is in barrels that have previously been used for RunRig.
Torbreck The Descendant 2018 is 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier. The wine is aged for 20 months in second fill French oak barriques
