Torbreck Woodcutters Semillon is a white wine made from 100% Semillon grapes sourced from the Barossa Valley wine-growing region of Australia. It is a food friendly wine, similar to some of the white wines found in the central and southern regions of France due, in part, to the use of the Madeira (more robust and pink skinned) clone of Semillon. Semillon has always found a natural home in the Barossa and was first planted in the region over 160 years ago by some of the first settlers in the region.
Torbreck Vintners was founded in 1994 by David Powell and is located at Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. The roots go back to 1992 when Powell, who was then working at Rockford, began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines, so that he could buy the fruit for his own wine. The first wine made under the Torbreck label was during the 1995 vintage, with the finished wines released in 1997. Torbreck was acquired by Pete Knight in 2008 and the senior winemaker is currently Ian Hongell.
Torbreck Woodcutters Semillon is 100% Semillon (Madeira Clone) sourced from the Ebenezer and Rowland Flat sub-districts of the Barossa. Grapes from both vineyards (split into four separate parcels) was handpicked and gently ‘whole bunch’ pressed to individual vats where they were left to settle. After 24 hours the younger blocks were racked to tank whilst the older more robust parcels were transferred to seasoned French barriques where they underwent a long cool fermentation over 5 to 6 months. The wine is matured for 3 months in a combination of 60% stainless steel tank and 40% seasoned French barriques.
The ‘Woodcutter’s‘ range is so named because founder Dave Powell spent time as a woodsman in the Torbreck Forest located near Inverness in north-eastern Scotland.
This wine is suitable for vegetarians.
From Torbreck: “The natural acidity and medium body of the Semillon grape takes great pride in Barossa vineyards that are naturally suited to the region. A wine that shows lifted aromas of fresh citrus fruits and flowers along with kaffir lime perfumes. The palate is tangy with long acidity and cleansing to the finish. Either as a fresh young wine or aged for up to 12 years to reveal brioche and lemon curd pastry like notes. The Lemon butter complexities are a real delight from 7-12 years.”
