Tyrrells Old Winery Pinot Noir is part of a range of Tyrrell’s wines named after the historic winery in the Hunter Valley which was built in 1863 for the first vintage in 1864
Tyrrells Wines was founded by Edward Tyrrell in 1858 and, since then, it has grown into one of the largest and most prestigious wine companies in Australia. From a base of 60 acres of vines in the Hunter Valley, the estate has grown to 900 acres of premium vineyards in Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale in South Australia and the Heathcote region in Victoria. Today Tyrrells wines is in the hands of 4th generation owner Bruce Tyrrell and family who continue to produce top quality wines and build on the success if their forebears.
Tyrrell’s pioneered the use of Pinot Noir in Australia in the early 1970s. In 1972, Tyrrell’s planted 2 acres of Pinot Noir which were among the first commercial plantings of this variety in the area. The 1976 Tyrrell’s Vat 6 Pinot Noir was selected in the 1979 “Gault Milleau World Dozen“, after beating wines from all over the world in the 1979 Wine Olympics in Paris.
Tyrrells Old Winery Pinot Noir is a blend of fruit sourced from some of the best red grape growing regions in South East Australia. After pressing the juice is fermented in a combination of traditional hand plunged open vats and larger potter tanks. The wine is then aged in mainly French oak casks for 12 months prior to bottling. 100% Pinot Noir.
