Wakefield Estate Riesling is 100% Clare Valley Riesling. It is made in a crisp and refreshing style.
Wakefield Wines is located in the heart of the Clare Valley. The company was founded by wine merchant Bill Taylor Senior in 1969 with the purchase of 178 hectares of vineyards near the Wakefield River in Auburn. Bill Taylor carefully chose the site for its red brown loam over limestone soils ( this is known as “terra rossa”) and the cool climate of the Clare valley. In that same year, 1969, the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted. Since 2000 the company has been run by Managing Director and third generation Winemaker Mitchell Taylor, the grandson of Bill Taylor Senior.
Today Wakefield Estate is one of the most highly esteemed cool climate producers in Australia. Almost all of the grapes are sourced from 500 hectares of family-owned vineyards in the winery which makes it one of the largest single estate plantings in Australia. They do source some fruit from trusted growers in other regions, Coonawarra, for example. The family’s home estate and vineyards are situated in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, in the sub-region of Auburn and stretch to another sub-region border, Watervale. As well as the estate range, they also produce the Jaraman and St Andrew’s ranges.
The grapes for the Wakefield Estate Riesling come from vineyards at an elevation of 350m above sea level with an age of 10 to 30 years old. The soils are Terra Rossa over Limestone. The fruit for the Wakefield Estate Riesling was harvested at night and as quickly as possible during this period in early February to maintain yields resulting in excellent fruit quality. The grapes are de-stemmed and are not crushed. The wine undergoes a cool fermentation in stainless steel. The wine is left to rest for 3 to 6 months.
Wakefield Wines are known under their original name of Taylor’s Wines in Australia and members of Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW) alongside other prestigious producers such as Jim Barry, Tyrrells and d’Arenberg.
Appearance: At release, there is a bright, vibrant clarity to the wine. It has a very pale straw colour and subtle green highlights to the edges.
Aroma: The wine displays lifted fresh and vibrant aromas. Kaffir lime and lemon characters abound, followed by layers of subtle blossom and enticing floral nuances.
Palate: The wine displays intense citrus fruit characters of fresh lemon and lime along withhints of orange blossom. Through the mid-palate there is excellent fruit presence with zesty fresh lemon and lime characters. The finish is crisp, clean and lingering –
hallmarks of a great Clare Valley Riesling.
Try Wakefield Estate Riesling with spicy Thai cuisine, anything with ginger or chili. Enjoy with grilled shrimp or scallops. The wine’s acidity complements the seafood’s delicate flavours.
For a sweet-savory combination, try it with glazed pork or honey-glazed ham. The wine’s fruity sweetness complements the caramelized flavors.
Finally, for dessert, try Wakefield Estate Riesling with a slice of peach or apricot tart for a lovely fruit-forward pairing.
