Description

Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay is a Californian white wine made from estate grown grapes from vineyards located  in the Livermore Valley AVA. It is the little brother to the oakier Wente Riva Ranch Chardonnay.

Wente Vineyards was founded by C. H. Wente, a first-generation immigrant from Germany, in 1883. Recognizing that the warm days, cool nights and gravelly soils of the Livermore Valley were ideal for growing grapes, he purchased 48 acres and planted vineyards. Continuing the 125 years legacy, the winery is managed today by the Fourth Generation of the Wente family, Eric, Philip, Carolyn, and the Fifth Generation, Christine and Karl. Arroyo Seco is widely regarded as one of the best places in California to grow Chardonnay and Riva Ranch is the name of the Wente family’s vineyard in Arroyo Seco, where they have been growing Chardonnay since the 1960’s. In 1936 Wente were, in fact, the first California winery to produce a wine actually labelled as Chardonnay and today many of the great Chardonnay vineyards in California are planted with the Wente Clone.

As mentioned above, the Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay is made from grapes grown in the Livermore Valley. It is named “Morning Fog” for the morning coastal fog pushed by Pacific wind streams into the bowl of the San Francisco Bay and lured inland by Livermore Valley’s unique East-West orientation. This daily phenomenon moderates the climate to produce excellent, beautifully balanced Chardonnay. Planted on various Wente clones, which are all harvested and vinified separately, the variation within the vineyards adds to the complexity of the wine.

The grapes are fermented 50% barrel fermented in neutral American oak barrels and 50% fermented in stainless steel tanks. The barrel fermented portion was aged sur lie for 5 months and bâtonnage, lees stirring, was performed monthly. The stainless steel portion was half aged on lees for 5 months while the other half was racked clean to preserve the fresh fruit characters. The final blend is 98% Chardonnay and 2% Gewurztraminer.

Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
