Description
Winchester Dry Gin is yet another new gin from the hugely successful Winchester Distillery (producers of Twisted Nose Watercress Gin, Hampshire Fine Dry Gin and a whole range of seasonal limited editions). Winchester Dry Gin is a tribute to the city of Winchester and an homage to the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table
Winchester Dry Gin was launched on World Gin Day 2017 at Winchester Great Hall. The Great Hall is one of the one of the finest surviving aisled halls of the 13th century (it was part of Winchester Castle) and contains one of the greatest symbols of medieval mythology, King Arthur’s Round Table. The wall hanging table was originally constructed in the 13th century, and repainted in its present form for Henry VIII. Around the edge of the table are the names of King Arthur’s Knights, King Arthur sits at the top of the table and there is a Tudor rose is in the middle. This all features on the label with ornate gold detailing and chiselled branding.
All of the gins at Winchester Distillery are distilled in a traditional copper pot still, a descendant of the alembic still, used to make small batches of spirits, unlike the continuous distillation of large, more commercial column stills. Winchester Dry Gin uses 25 medieval botanicals commonly used in food and medicine in the period, one for each of the Knight’s seated at the round table with King Arthur represented by Juniper. Bottled at 44% abv, a little higher than Winchester Distillery’s other gins which are normally bottled at 40% (apart from the Navy Strength Gunpowder Gin bottled at 57% ABV!).
