Taylors Velvet Falernum is a famous alcoholic mixer from Barbados made by R L Seale & Co Ltd at the Foursquare Distillery on Barbados. It was developed by John D Taylor, of Bridgetown, in 1890 and is considered by many to be the original Falernum.
Taylors Velvet Falernum is a blend of water, fine cane syrup, Barbados rum, lime juice and essence of almond and clove and is bottled at 11% abv. Some other Falernums can be non-alcoholic and other flavourings sometimes used are vanilla, ginger and allspice. It is a sweet, syrup like mixer that is the base for many Caribbean Tiki drinks and cocktails similar to the mixer Orgeat. Being rum-based Velvet Falernum is an ideal mixer for rum-based cocktails but it also goes great with gin, vodka and bourbon, however it can also be drunk neat or on the rocks.
