Description

Umani Ronchi San Lorenzo  is a red wine from the Marche wine growing region of Italy made from 100% Montepulciano grapes and bottled as a Rosso Conero DOC. It was first released in 1982.

Umani Ronchi was founded by Gino Umani Ronchi  in the 1950s in Cupramontana, in the heart of the Verdicchio Classico production zone. Shortly afterwards the company was taken over by the Bianchi-Bernetti family who expanded operations and moved the headquarters to Osimo in the Rosso Conero wine-growing region of Marche. The Marche region of Italy is framed by glorious hills that meet the waters of the Adriatic Sea, with a favourable climate and soil and is a region than the producer Umani Ronchi really has made famous. It is situated about two thirds of the way up the east coast of Italy. Massimo Bernetti’s son Michele joined the firm in the 1990s. He was instrumental in partnering up with Giacomo Tachis skilled winemaker, known for celebrated wines like the Solaia and Sassicaia, in the mid 1990s. In 2020 Umani Ronchi was ranked as of one of Wine Spectator’s 34 Best Wineries of Italy.

Umani Ronchi prides itself as the leading exponent of the two major wines of the Marche, Verdicchio and Rosso Conero, as well as being one of the principle producers of wines from the neighbouring Abruzzi region. The company owns 110 hectares of vineyards in the Verdicchio Classico area, 60 hectares in the Rosso Conero DO, and 30 in Abruzzi.

The grapes for Umani Ronchi San Lorenzo are sourced from Rosso Conero DOC vineyards in Osimo and Ancona. The wine is vinified traditionally. The grapes are destalked and lightly pressed followed by a period of maceration of 10 to 12 days in stainless steel. After alcoholic fermentation the wine is allowed to under malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged. 50% of the wine is aged in large old oak casks (5000 to 8000 litres) and the rest is aged in third or fourth fill barriques for a period of about 12 months. Finally the wine is blended and left in bottle for another 6 months prior to release.

Umani Ronchi San Lorenzo Rosso Conero is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Tasting Notes

Umani Ronchi San Lorenzo has a brilliant ruby red colour with garnet tints. The nose is sweet, predominantly fruity, with typical notes of morello cherry. Rich and pulpy in the mouth, flavourful and pleasantly harmonious, with silky tannins. The long finish is austere and intensely fruity.

Food Pairing

Try with stuffed pasta, grilled dishes, spit- roasted pork, game and braised dishes, as well as a rich cheeseboard of mature and tangy cheeses.
