Description

Yangarra Estate Old Vine Grenache is made from 100% Old Vine Grenache Noir sourced from a vineyard in located close to Blewitt Springs in the McLaren Vale.

Yangarra Estate is owned by Jackson Family Wines (JFW). The Chairman and proprietor of Jackson Family Wines is Barbara Banke who was marrried to Jess Jackson of Kendall Jackson Fame. JFW had a vision to create a global wine company known for its extraordinary premium and luxury wines from many of the greatest wine-growing regions of the world. Indeed, under Barbara’s stewardship they have since become one of the world’s largest, and high quality, wine companies with interests in California (La Crema, Hartford Court, Camelot Highlands and many more), Chile, Italy, France and South Africa, with their new Capensis project.

Yangarra Estate was established in 2001 when Jackson Family Wines acquired Eringa Park Vineyard. It is a single vineyards estate located in McLaren Vale and specializes in Southern Rhône varieties with emphasis on the estate’s bush-vine Grenache. The property is 170 total hectares, of which nearly 90 hectares are planted to vine. Other grapes varieties grown here include well known grape varieties such as Shiraz, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc with some much more obscure varieties (at least in Australia) such as Bourboulenc, Picpoul Noir, Clairette Blanc and Counois. Yangarra’s combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and refreshing evening breezes make it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in the moderate maritime Mediterranean environments. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic.

Yangarra Estate Old Vine Grenache is produce from gnarly old vines planted in 1946. There are 17 hectares of un-irrigated, bush vines planted on a deep sandy dune called The Beach, overlying the North Maslin Sands geological formation. The grapes are hand sorted at the winery and 50% whole berries are used. The wine is fermented using natural yeasts. The wine undergoes a very gentle pump over regime during fermentation, often just wetting the cap. Time on skins during maceration varies, the majority is approximately 21 days, with a few extended to 140 days. No pressings used. The wine was then matured in a mixture of older French oak puncheons and foudre, ceramic eggs and amphora.

Certified Organic / Biodynamic. Also suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Tasting Notes

Yangarra Estate Old Vine Grenache is a complex, perfumed and elegant wine with a trademark tannin structure. The nose is a rush of cloves, lavender, dark cherries and raspberries. The palate is rich and young, with grainy tannins that will soften in time. As it evolves dry cocoa and earthiness develops. A serious wine, this old vine Grenache finishes gently grippy, spicy and full.

Food Pairing

This is a great match for roast duck and other game birds. Also makes an interesting match for gravadlax and homemade horseradish.

For the cheeseboard, try with a good Manchego or aged Gouda.

Awards

2024 Halliday Wine Companion Wine of the Year, Red Wine of the Year, Grenache of the Year, 99 Points.
